Unsung But Impactful Voices of Clinical Research Heroes: Featuring Peik Sean Chong, Regulatory Specialist, NYU Langone Health

Clinical research is often associated with scientific discoveries and breakthrough treatments. But long before a study reaches participants, another kind of work is already underway—reviewing protocols, maintaining compliance, coordinating approvals, and ensuring every step meets the standards that protect both research and the people involved.

Before a study can begin, documents must be reviewed. Regulations must be followed. Every process must meet ethical and regulatory standards. It’s work that rarely makes headlines, yet it forms the foundation that allows clinical research to move forward.

For Peik Sean Chong, Regulatory Specialist at the Inflammatory Bowel Disease Center at NYU Langone Health, that’s exactly where she has found her purpose.

Supporting more than 75 active clinical research studies, Sean helps investigators and research teams navigate the complex regulatory landscape that keeps studies compliant and progressing safely. While much of her work happens behind the scenes, she has always been motivated by something much bigger than the paperwork.

“I wanted to be part of something that makes a real difference. Knowing that my work helps move research forward and ultimately impacts patients is what drew me to clinical research.”

That simple belief continues to guide the work she does every day.

Clinical Trials Day Spotlight: A small tribute to her big impact in clinical research.

Finding Purpose Behind the Scenes

For Sean, regulatory work has never been just about paperwork or compliance. Every submission, review, and approval represents one part of a much larger effort to advance medical research.

Although she doesn’t work directly with patients every day, she has always felt connected to the bigger picture.

“I enjoy being part of a bigger healthcare journey. Even if I’m not interacting with patients directly, it’s rewarding to know that the work we do supports research that can improve lives and contribute to future medical advances.”

Knowing that her work helps investigators continue important research is what gives even the smallest tasks a deeper sense of purpose.

More Than Documents and Deadlines

To many people outside clinical research, regulatory work may appear to revolve around forms, approvals, and compliance requirements.

Sean has learned that it’s much more than that.

“One thing I’ve learned is that while our role is often behind the scenes, our work definitely isn’t. Every document, review, and process plays an important part in keeping research moving safely and compliantly.”

That realization has shaped the way she approaches her role today.

For Sean, attention to detail isn’t simply part of the job—it’s an essential part of protecting the integrity of clinical research.

Supporting Research Means Supporting People

Clinical research continues to evolve—not only through scientific innovation, but also through the way organizations care for the people conducting that research.

One recent shift Sean has appreciated is the growing focus on work-life balance within the industry.

“I like seeing more conversations around work-life balance in clinical research. It’s great to see organizations recognizing that supporting their teams leads to better outcomes for everyone.”

To her, it’s an encouraging reminder that strong research depends on strong teams.

Helping Patients Find the Right Opportunities

As clinical research becomes increasingly patient-centered, Sean believes one of the most meaningful improvements has been making studies easier to find.

“Trial matching programs and referral networks have made a big difference. They help connect patients with studies they may not have found otherwise, making clinical trials more accessible.”

To Sean, these innovations are helping remove barriers by making it easier for patients to learn about research opportunities they may never have discovered on their own.

The Moments That Stay With Her

Although regulatory specialists spend much of their time behind the scenes, the people who participate in research are never far from mind.

For Sean, some of the most meaningful experiences have come from supporting pediatric studies.

“Working on pediatric studies has always stuck with me. Seeing the resilience of the kids and the dedication of their families is a constant reminder of why all the behind-the-scenes work is worth it.”

It’s a reminder that every protocol, every submission, and every regulatory review ultimately connects back to real people and families hoping for better treatment options.

Those are the moments that continue to give purpose to the work.

A Simple Philosophy

Sometimes the simplest advice leaves the greatest impression.

When asked about the quote that continues to inspire her work, Sean’s answer is immediate.

“Be the person you want to work with.”

It’s a philosophy she carries into every interaction. Whether working alongside investigators, research teams, or colleagues, she believes that respect, reliability, and collaboration help create stronger teams—and ultimately stronger research.

Quiet Work. Lasting Impact.

Sean’s career is a reminder that meaningful contributions to clinical research aren’t always the most visible ones.

Whether she’s supporting investigators, reviewing regulatory documents, or helping studies stay compliant, her work creates the structure that allows research to continue with confidence.

Every breakthrough depends on many different people working toward the same goal. Sean’s story highlights the importance of the professionals whose dedication, precision, and consistency help make those breakthroughs possible.

At TrialX, we’re proud to celebrate professionals like Peik, whose commitment reminds us that every role in clinical research—seen or unseen—plays an important part in advancing medical research and creating better possibilities for patients.
