Accelerating Clinical Trial Access: TrialX and The Sickle Cell Disease Association of America Empower Patients with a Global Clinical Trial Finder

Three ways to find a relevant clinical trial using the SCDAA Clinical Trial Finder tool powered by TrialX

Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) is a complex genetic disorder affecting the production of hemoglobin that causes red blood cells to deform into a sticky rigid, sickle shape. This leads to severe complications, such as pain, organ damage, and health issues. Despite advancements in treatment, managing SCD remains challenging, and many patients seek clinical trials as a pathway to innovative therapies.

However, finding and enrolling in clinical trials is not always easy. With an estimated 100,000 people affected by SCD in the United States, many patients and caregivers struggle to navigate the complex clinical trial landscape. Challenges such as information overload, strict eligibility criteria, geographic limitations, and a general lack of awareness often prevent patients from accessing potentially life-changing treatments.

How does TrialX-powered SCDAA Clinical Trial Finder help SCD patients?

To address these challenges, the Sickle Cell Disease Association of America (SCDAA) has partnered with TrialX to develop the Clinical Trial Finder— a centralized, easy-to-use platform designed to help individuals living with sickle cell disease, as well as their families and caregivers, find relevant clinical trials.

Key Features of the Clinical Trial Finder

The Clinical Trial Finder serves as a user-friendly tool that simplifies the search process for patients and caregivers. Some of its key features include:

Centralized Platform: The tool offers a centralized location to search for clinical trials based on keywords, location, study type, and phase, making it easier for users to find trials that match their needs.

The Clinical Trial Finder helps patients and caregivers explore relevant clinical trials through three different search methods.

Three ways to find a relevant clinical trial using the SCDAA Clinical Trial Finder tool powered by TrialX
  1. Guided Search: This feature offers a step-by-step approach for participants, providing an introductory walkthrough of clinical trials. It explains what clinical trials are, the benefits of participating, and what participants can expect during the process.

The guided search has also included a “Clinical trial primer” link providing additional details on the risks and benefits of participation.

Users are then prompted to provide location details and answer a few questions about their sickle cell disease to refine their search and find the most relevant clinical trials.

Location, disease-specific questions, and age-related prompts help users narrow their clinical trial search.
  1. Search on your own: The self-directed search option allows users to customize the search by narrowing it to a preferred location, keywords, study types, and phase, which empowers them to find specific trials catering to their needs.

  1. Volunteer Registry: Patients can register for future clinical trials, ensuring they are notified about new opportunities without having to actively search. This feature helps keep patients engaged in exploring treatment options.

Easy Outreach to Study Teams: Participants can quickly connect with researchers using predefined email templates, making it easier to initiate communication with study teams.

Benefits of Participating in Clinical Trials for Sickle Cell Disease Patients

Participating in clinical trials offers several advantages for patients with sickle cell disease, including:

Access to new treatments: Patients may gain early access to innovative treatments that are not yet available to the public.

Enhanced medical Care: Participants often receive additional medical monitoring and care throughout the trial, which can lead to more personalized attention.

Contributing to scientific advancements: By joining clinical trials, patients play a vital role in advancing research, which helps improve treatment strategies for future SCD patients.

Educational support: Many trials provide free educational materials and support services, including counseling, to help patients better understand their condition and treatment options.

Influencing future treatment approvals: The data collected from clinical trials contributes to the approval process of new therapies, ultimately making them accessible to all patients with SCD.

Breakthrough Clinical Trials in Sickle Cell Disease

Base Editing for Sickle Cell Disease

One of the pioneering clinical trial that is recruiting involves base editing, a breakthrough technique that edits specific DNA bases to repair genetic mutations. Beam Therapeutics’ BEACON trial is a phase 1/2 clinical trial investigating the safety and efficacy of base-edited hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) for severe SCD.

In this groundbreaking trial, HSCs are edited ex vivo to mimic natural mutations known to enhance fetal hemoglobin production, potentially improving overall blood function and alleviating SCD symptoms.

Despite setbacks, early results from other base-editing studies have been promising. The scientific community eagerly awaits the result of this study as it can bring transformative remedies for SCD and countless other genetic disorders.

Taking the Next Steps

Patients with sickle cell disease face numerous challenges when it comes to finding the right clinical trials. The SCDAA’s Clinical Trial Finder, powered by TrialX, offers a solution by addressing common barriers such as information overload, geographic limitations, and lack of awareness.

By simplifying the process, the Clinical Trial Finder helps patients easily navigate their options and discover trials that may offer promising new treatments. Explore the  Sickle Cell Disease Association of America’s Clinical Trial Finder here.
