Hollywood actress Catherine Zeta –Jones, in a recent interview to US InStyle Magazine speaks up about her suffering from manic depression and her diagnosis of bipolar disorder II.

Zeta-Jones is wife of Michael Douglas, Hollywood actor. She was admitted to a rehabilitation hospital over a year back where she was diagnosed with bipolar disorder II. Incidentally, Douglas is battling Stage Four throat cancer leading to stress, worry and despair for Zeta-Jones which led to the hospital admittance.

Bipolar disorder usually occurs when there is an imbalance in the brain leading to inability to manage and regulate moods. Hypomania and manic depression are common symptoms of bipolar disorder.

Zeta-Jones came out in the open to talk about her diagnosis with the aim of combating stigma surrounding mental illness and to reiterate that it is controllable. She is quoted in the interview,

I hope I can help remove any stigma attached to it, and that those who don’t have it under control will seek help with all that is available to treat it.

Zeta-Jones claims to Google her name and focus on the negative comments during her unwell days and she claims that the best thing she does now not going online.

Catherine Zeta-Jones is a Welsh born actress, who gained fame with her movies, The Mask of Zorro, Entrapment, and Traffic. She married Douglas in 1998 and the couple have two children.

This is not the first time that Jones has spoken about her illness. She had spoken about it in an interview for the Peoples magazine in 2011.

It takes tremendous courage to come out and speak about a mental disorder especially with the stigma surrounding it. Jones is an inspiration that mental disorder is curable and one can lead a normal life by seeking help and controlling it.
