MMRF Founder/CEO Kathy Giusti Named Time’s 100 Most Influential People

MMRF Founder, Kathy Giusti Named 2011 Most Influential People in the World

We at TrialX are delighted to hear that Time Magazine has named Kathy Giusti, Founder and CEO of the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation (MMRF), as one of the  “100 most influential people in the World”  for the year 2011. This is a well deserved nomination as Ms. Giusti and the MMRF have played a critical role in spearheading the development of new cures for Multiple Myeloma.

The MMRF has been instrumental in building the Multiple Myeloma Research Consortium (MMRC), funding research, advocacy and fund raising. To date, the MMRC has supported the launch of 30 Multiple Myeloma clinical trials of new and combination therapies 60 percent faster than the industry standard, including eight that are now in late stage clinical development.  They have also been leading the way in utilizing patient-centric online tools to empower Myeloma patients to find clinical trials and connect with clinical trial investigators (a custom system built of the main site for the MMRF).

As mentioned in the press release issued by the MMRF, “Ms. Giusti founded the MMRF (soon after getting diagnosed with the disease in 1998), which has helped accelerate every significant milestone in the disease. Most notably, the MMRF played a pivotal role in bringing patients four new treatments for myeloma in four years—a track record unparalleled in oncology. Introduction of these treatments, now the standard of care for multiple myeloma, has helped to more than double life expectancy among some patients to almost seven years. Success treating myeloma has led to use of these drugs in many other cancers, including breast cancer, prostate cancer, and lymphoma.”

About the Times 100 Most Influential List

The TIME 100, now in its eighth year, recognizes the activism, innovation and achievement of the world’s most influential individuals. As TIME Managing Editor, Richard Stengel has said of the list in the past, “The TIME 100 is not a list of the most powerful people in the world, it’s not a list of the smartest people in the world, it’s a list of the most influential people in the world. They’re scientists, they’re thinkers, they’re philosophers, they’re leaders, they’re icons, they’re artists, they’re visionaries.  People who are using their ideas, their visions, their actions to transform the world and have an effect on a multitude of people.”
