Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, An enigma (and a Hodgkins Lymphoma Patient)
Jackie Kennedy gained prominence after she became the first lady of the United States (January 1961 to November 1963). Ms Kennedy was born in Southampton, New York to Irish-French parents. Jackie, then Jacqueline Lee Bouvier belonged to the same social group as President John Kennedy and they met in 1952 and soon after started dating. They got married in 1953.
She had a daughter Caroline and son John from Kennedy after suffering a miscarriage and giving birth to a still born baby. In 1963 President Kennedy was assassinated which left Jackie traumatised. Later in 1968 she married a rich Greek entrepreneur Aristotle Onassis after she feared the security of her life and that of her children in the United States when her brother-in-law Robert Kennedy was assassinated in the same year.
Jackie Kennedy’s sense of fashion is very well talked about all across the world even today. During her times she was a fashion icon and her aura was wide spread. She assigned Oleg Cassini, a French designer to create a collection for her. Within the period 1961 to 1963, Cassini created some of the finest apparel for the First Lady which gained historic eminence and are remembered even today like the “fawn coat” and “gala gown”. She wore some of the finest suits and clothing during her visit to India, Pakistan and the European countries. Soon after she became a widow, her fashion statement changed. She dressed more liberally and teamed it up with the perfect accessories and jewelleries.
Jackie Kennedy Onassis was diagnosed with the Hodgkin’s lymphoma in 1993, a rare form of cancer. Her medical situation was publicly known. She continued working, though within strict hours but quit smoking on the insistence of her daughter. The disease had spread in her body and she took her final breath in May 1994. Her funeral took place on 23rd May 1994 and was attended by a huge number of friends, family and well-wishers. Her soul now rests at the Arlington National Cemetery along with President Kennedy and their son Patrick and daughter Arabella.
