Pfizer Approached Vatican To Get the Pope’s Blessing for Viagra!

Continuing on with our excerpts from Jamie Reidy’s book ‘Hard Sell’, here is another excerpt in which he describes how Pfizer pre-empted any negative opinion or sanctions from the Catholic Church by reaching out to the vatican.

Pope Benedict Image on a Condom - 'I said No' But Yes to Viagra

The Vatican Said 'No' to condoms, But Yes to Viagra! (This happened during Pope John Paul's time)

In a brilliant marketing move, Pfizer contacted the Vatican to get its approval. Its blessing, if you will,  of Viagra.

There had been concern within Pfizer that the catholic church might expose Viagra because it would undoubtedly be used by unmarried couples and masturbating men, two church no-nos. Fortunately, the then Pope (John Paul) chose to focus on the benefits Viagra would provide married couples. Declaring that Viagra would resort vitality to many marriages, he enthusiastically supported the introduction of the little blue pill

Viagra may not have resulted in an increase in church attendance but it certainly caused many parishioners to scream out the Lord’s name (“Oh My God”) for the time in years.”

Though the Vatican usually has a history of making more conservative statements (for example for long the Vatican was opposed to condom use), they were more positive about Viagra.

This excerpt is from Jamie Reidy’s Book Hard Sell in which he describes his life as a Pharma sales Representative for Pfizer and its wonder drug Viagra. Another excerpt describes how the drug works using a hilarious NFL and Football Analogy. And another that describes the ‘Rockstar’ like reception given to Viagra Reps.
