List of Gastroparesis Clinical Trials
Gastroparesis is a disease of the stomach, in which the stomach is unable to empty out its contents fully or partially. In case of Gastroparesis, the failure of stomach functionality is not caused by any obstruction in the digestive system.
Exactly what causes Gastroparesis, is not well understood till now. However, scientists consider this to develop because of a disruption of neural signals to the stomach. Often it is noticed in patients with Diabetes Mellitus. Persons with Systemic Sclerosis and Gastrectomy also have a higher risk of Gastroparesis. It can also occur as an after effect of certain nerve signal blocking medication.
Symptoms of Gastroparesis includes nausea, abdominal fullness, vomiting, loss of weight, abdominal distention etc. For diabetic patients, Gastroparesis can cause Hypoglycemia.
Diagnosis is mainly done through tests like Esophagogastroduodenoscopy or EGD, gastric emptying studies etc. Treatment of Gastroparesis involves medications and diet restrictions. Small and well cooked meals are prescribed for patients. For patients with Diabetes Mellitus, it is highly recommended to keep the blood sugar level in control, because it might improve the symptoms of Gastroparesis. Botox treatment and surgery are also used at certain situations.
Several research studies are being conducted by experts to find out effective treatment for Gastroparesis. Clinical trials for Gastroparesis are an important step in the development of new treatments and 19 clinical trials are currently active in the United State for gastroparesis. There are currently 19 different interventions being investigated in Gastroparesis clinical trials. Of the 19 Gastroparesis clinical trials (medical research studies), 1 clinical trials are in Phase I, 5 are in Phase II and 2 are in Phase III (read more about what the different phases of a clinical trial mean and how they differ). These clinical trials are being conducted in 65 cities and are being performed by 75 different clinical trial investigators (doctors who conduct and supervise the clinical study).
