TrialX at the White House TOP Health Showcase Event

by Shweta Mishra

TrialX recently presented at the invitational-only event “Artificial Intelligence and Open Data Innovation for Health with TOP Health Showcase” at the White House Eisenhower Executive Office Building (EEOB).  The event took place on 28th of February, 2019 to and TrialX presented the digital tools we developed as part of the The Opportunity Project (TOP) Health sprint.

Dr. Khan, CEO, demonstrated TrialX iConnect with new TOP Health AI ecosystem-enabled capabilities

TOP health sprint was the first-ever pilot of a 14-week tech sprint, organized by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Office of the Chief Technology Officer (CTO) and Presidential Innovation Fellows (PIF), as an effort to address real-world challenges and improve everyday lives by strengthening collaborations between technologists, issue experts, and community leaders.

HHS and PIF invited teams to deliver entries in two categories – each challenge designed as an open-ended question that the participants were supposed to address using federal data and emerging technologies like Artificial Intelligence (AI). The 10 TOP Health teams developed and delivered digital tools to address one of two challenges. TrialX was the only team to have digital tools both for the AI ecosystem track and the Lyme disease track.  In the AI track, it demonstrated capabilities at the diamond level for AI’s Choice including: 1) Leveraging open data, promoting transparency and reproducibility 2) promoting trust of AI solution through testing. 3) demonstrating usability of AI solution by other parties and 4) promoting AI ecosystem and re-use of usable solutions.  Special thanks to Dr. Gil Alterovitz, Presidential Innovation Fellow, who led the AI ecosystem track.

Sharib Khan, CEO presenting iConnect at the White House

As part of the TOP Health Challenge #1, TrialX’s CEO Dr Sharib Khan presented it’s enhanced iConnect clinical trials patient matching tool on 28th Feb, 2019. Under this category, the participants were given a mission to create digital tools based on AI that help in finding experimental therapies for patients, and vice versa. Based on the TOP Health sprint, the iConnect platform now includes advanced semantic and decision engine based AI techniques to match patient health record information to clinical trials eligibility criteria.

We also had a 5 minute presentation of our second digital toolThe Lyme Tracker – we developed for the TOP Health Challenge #2 with our partner Global Lyme Alliance (GLA). Under this category teams were asked to deliver a digital tool developed by harnessing the power of collaboration, citizen science, and data for Lyme disease – a data driven digital tool for public benefit. We developed the Lyme Tracker to aid Lyme disease research and management by providing people an app to track their Lyme disease symptoms easily and on the go. The Director of Educational Programming at GLA, Holly Wainwright presented the Lyme Tracker at the event. Special thanks to Dr. Kristen Honey, Innovator in Residence at the HHS  CTO’s office, who led the Lyme track.
