What is Satranidazole (Satrogyl Film-Coated Tab  and Satrogyl-O Tab)?

Satranidazole is a type of antiprotozoal agents. Satranidazole belongs to category of alcohol drugs.

It belongs to the ritroimidazole group of drugs. It is highly potent, well tolerated and clinically useful against common protozoa. It is twice as active as other nitroimidazole against giardiasis and amoebiasis. It is also significantly more active against anaerobes than other nitroimidazoles. Satranidazole, a 5-nitroimidazole derivative, was tested for its activity against reference strains and clinical isolates of anaerobic bacteria in vitro and in two munne models of anaerobic infection in comparison with metronidazole, tinidazole, ornidazole and clindamycin.

Indication/Contraindication for use of Satranidazole (Satrogyl Film-Coated Tab  and Satrogyl-O Tab)

  • Giardiasis, trichomoniasis, anaerobic infections.
  • Intestinal and hepatic amoebiasis.

Side Effects of Satranidazole (Satrogyl Film-Coated Tab  and Satrogyl-O Tab)

  • Headache, dry mouth, weakness and dizziness.
  • Side effects are mild and reversible.
  • It does not produce nausea, vomiting or metallic taste in the mouth.

Dosage and Prescribing Information for Satranidazole (Satrogyl Film-Coated Tab  and Satrogyl-O Tab)

Adults: Amoebiasis : 300mg twice daily or 3-5 days. Trichomoniasis and Giardiasis : 600mg as a single dose.
