What is Praziouantel (Biltricide)?
Praziquantel is an anthelmintic effective against flatworms. Praziquantel is not licensed for use in humans in the UK; it is, however, available as a veterinary anthelmintic, and is available for use in humans on a named-patient basis.
Praziquantel is used against Schistosoma. Praziquantel is the primary treatment for human schistosomiasis, for which it is usually effective in a single dose.Praziquantel is also used to treat liver flukes such as Clonorchis sinensis, and against fascioliasis.
This drug is commonly sold as Brand Name Biltricide.
Indication/Contraindication for use of Praziouantel (Biltricide)
- Intestinal tapeworm infestation.
- Neurocysticercosis, dermal cysticercosis.
Dosage and Prescribing Information for Praziouantel (Biltricide)
Neurocysticercosis: 50 mg/kg body.wt daily in 3 divided doses for 15 days or as required. T. Solium (Pork tapeworm), T. Saginata (beef tape worm), D. Pacificum: 10 mg/kg body wt as a single dose. H. nana (dwarf tapeworm) 15 mg/kg body wt as a single dose.
