What is Mephentermine (Wyfentermina and Wyamine)?

Mephentermine belongs to category of sympathomimetics drugs. Mephentermine is a type of energized alpha-agonists.

It has a sympathetic mimetic action. Action of Mephentermine results from an increase in the cardiac output as well as from peripheral vasoconstriction although the contribution of the latter is negligible. It increases the blood flow without compromising the arterial resistance, is a logical drug for the treatment of shock due to myocardial infarction and gram negative bacteremia. It has a special advantage bacaose it decreases myocardial irritability and prevents rather than induces arrhythmias.

Mephentermine is a cardiac stimulant. It was formerly used in Wyamine nasal decongestant inhalers and before that as a stimulant in psychiatry. It has been used as a treatment for hypotension. This drug is commonly sold as Brand Name Wyfentermina.

Indication/Contraindication for use of Mephentermine (Wyfentermina and Wyamine)

  • MAO inhibitors, hypertension, shock due to loss of blood or fluid.
  • Hypotension caused by phenothiazines.

Dosage and Prescribing Information for Mephentermine (Wyfentermina and Wyamine)

Shock accompany in g myocardial infarction An initial dose of 60 mg. l.V. in a single 2ml. injection may be administered followed by I.V. infusion of 0.1% Mephentermine in 5% dextrose in water. An alternate method is the I.V. administration of serial doses of Mephentermine 15 to 45 mg supplemented with I.M. Mephentermine 35 mg as necessary Shock or Hypotension accompanying severe medical illness. 20-80mg I.V. or I.M. followed by LV. infusica of 0.1% Mephentermine in 5°/ D/V Hypotension secondary to spinal anesthesia in the obstetrical patient undergoing cesarean section. 15mg I.V. may be repeated if response is not adequate. Hypotension occurring during surgical procedures or following spinal anesthesia. 30-45mg I.V. in a single injection, repeated as necessaty or I,V.infusion of 0.1% Mephentermine in 5% D/VV Prevention of hypotension attendant to spinal anesthesia. To surgical procedures or occurring in recovery roorn. 3045mg. I.M. or I.V. infusion of 0.1% Mephentermine in 5% D/W.

Drug Interactions of Mephentermine (Wyfentermina and Wyamine)

Risk of ventricular fibrillation in patients undergoing an anesthesia with cyclopropane and halothane. Increased risk of cardiac arrhythmias with cardiac glycosides, quinidine and tricyclic antidepressants.

Precautions while prescribing Mephentermine (Wyfentermina and Wyamine)
