What is Mecobalamin / Methylcobalamin (Mevocon)?

It is a kind of endogenous coenzyme B12. Mecobalamin plays an important rolè in transmethylation as a coenzyme in the synthesis of methionine from homocysteine. Mecobalamin is well transported to nerve cell organelles, and promotes nucletic acid and protein synthesis. Mecobalamin is a kind of endogenous coenzyme B12. The standard dose is 0.5 mg. This drug is offered both as capsule and injection under the name Mevocon.

Indication/Contraindication for use of Mecobalamin / Methylcobalamin (Mevocon)

  • Peripheral neuropathy, diabetic neuropathy, alcoholic neuropathy, drug induced neuropathy, dementia.

Side Effects of Mecobalamin / Methylcobalamin (Mevocon)

  • Rarely hypersensitivity reactions like rash may occur.
  • Gastrointestinal adverse drug reactions included anorexia, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.

Dosage and Prescribing Information for Mecobalamin / Methylcobalamin (Mevocon)

1,500 mcg of Mecobalamin daily divided into three doses, for a period of minimum 2 month. The dosage may be adjusted depending on the patient’s age and symptoms.
