After years of denying use of banned drugs and doping charges, Lance Armstrong has finally spoken, and what a perfect choice to make his confession to, Oprah Winfrey! Oprah is the global talk show host in whose shows the most nondescript person or the most heinous criminal would be coerced into revealing secrets willingly.
However, things seemed very different Thursday night, when Oprah, without her usual comfy warmth interviewed Lance Armstrong for two and a half hours. The second part of the interview will be aired on Friday evening.
Well, we knew beforehand that Armstrong had confessed, thanks to Oprah’s appearance on CBS News the previous day. However, even though Oprah said that she was ‘satisfied’ with Armstrong’s answers…I wonder how many of us watching the program actually agreed with Oprah.
Armstrong seemed to be his usual steely self and personally, I never detected any kind of remorse even while he was admitting to doping. A heartfelt ‘SORRY’ to all the people directly was missing in the confession to Oprah.
Even though the USADA claims that Armstrong’s was the most sophisticated of doping programs, Armstrong’s stance that it was part of a natural process like ‘filling his bottles’ or ‘filling air in the tyres’ without considering it to be any kind of cheating was an obnoxious pretext.
The internet is rife with media polls asking whether Armstrong can be forgiven! I doubt it, post his television confession even those who felt he deserved another chance might have second thoughts.
Another remarkable aspect of the Armstrong story that is doing the rounds is whether his doping was responsible for his cancer. Interestingly, Armstrong began doping in the mid 90s and this period would have been in his pre-cancer stage. Of course, cancer is a culmination of many factors and one cannot attribute it to any single reason, however, there is evidence to prove that doping may cause cancer.
Disgraced and stripped of Tour de France titles, and considered to be one of America’s greatest athletes, Lance Armstrong was stripped off his Olympics 2000 medal too before the much hyped confession to Oprah Winfrey.
The only shining star in Armstrong’s quiver is his cancer charity Livestrong, which has distanced itself from the tainted cyclist. Livestrong now has to chart out a different course without its founder and main inflow of finance!
The first part of Oprah’s interview of Armstrong was devoid of any surprises, hope the second part would be more explosive in tandem with Oprah’s style.
