Type 2 Diabetes: Risks Increase With Regular Skipping Of Breakfast
A recent study published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, find that men who skipped breakfast gained weight, had mood swings, as well as setbacks of memory and energy levels, reports New York Times.
- Investigated and followed eating patterns in 29,206 US men for 16 years.
- These men were initially free of type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and cancer.
- The study discovered that men who skipped breakfast had a 21% higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
- Men who ate three times a day were less likely to develop type 2 diabetes when compared to those who ate only twice a day.
- However, snacking in addition to the three main meals increased risk of type 2 diabetes.
The results of the study remained the same even after the researchers accounted for BMI and the quality of breakfasts consumed.
Studies before this have also linked breakfast to risk of type 2 diabetes but the exact reason for this is unknown. Maybe people who skip breakfast tend to eat more during other meals or even tend to snack more often. Scientists believe that a wholesome morning meal helps in stabilizing blood sugar for the day.
