Okay all those obsessed with dieting and keeping tabs on the latest diet fads, you may want to check out this list of the best of the most popular diets as named by U.S. News and World report.

A panel of 20 recognized health experts analyzed each of the 20 diets.

Local registered  dietician Dr. Katherine Beals said,” Anybody looking to lose weight knows what they should be doing, They know they should eat more fruits and vegetables, more whole grains, low-fat dairy and limit high-calorie, high-energy foods. They know this.”

Criteria for Ranking.

The diets were ranked on the basis of the following criteria-:

  1. How easy they are to follow.
  2. Nutrition provided by them.
  3. Their effectiveness for weight loss and against diabetes and heart diseases.

Top Five Diets.

  1. DASH (Dietary approaches to stop hypertension)
  2. Mediterranean Diet.
  3. TLC (Therapeutic Lifestyle Changes) Diet.
  4. Weight Watchers.
  5. Mayo Clinic Diet.

U.S. News’ health editor Lindsay Lyon said,” The goal of the Best Diets rankings is to help consumers find authoritative guidance on healthful diets that will work for them over the long haul”.

The highest marks for weight loss diets went to Weight Watchers. The diet gives choices to its members in what they eat, but assigns point values to each food.

For heart health The Ornish diet was ranked No. 1. Diet has to be followed one day at a time, low fat approach. In the same category the TLC diet was ranked No. 2. To prevent or manage diabetes the DASH Diet was given highest marks.

According to Dr. Beals, a professor of nutrition at the University of Utah and participating expert in the U.S. News’ six-month study,” There is no quick fix when it comes to weight loss, you need to eat right and be active, it is as simple as that”
