Melanoma has affected many well-known people, including Bob Marley. In July 1977, he was found to have acral lentiginous melanoma, a form of malignant melanoma. In !980, Marley sought treatment at a Bavarian clinic during a tour, where he received a controversial type of cancer therapy partly based on avoidance of certain foods/drinks. After fighting the cancer without success for eight months, Marley flew back to the USA.
He died at Cedars of Lebanon Hospital in Miami (now University of Miami Hospital) on the morning of 11 May 1981, at the age of 36. The spread of melanoma to his lungs and brain caused his death.
