List of Clinical Trials for Uterine Fibroids (Myomas)

Uterine Fibroids are a type of tumor, which develop in the uterus of women. However, they are benign in nature – which means they are non-cancerous. The fibroids can grow inside the wall of uterus or can be attached to the walls. Although they are not carcinogenic, but they can cause various discomforting symptoms like pain in pelvic region, excessive bleeding during menstruation, frequent urge of urination etc. Fibroids are quite common (read about Fibroids symptoms, treatment and about Beverly Johnson’s history of Fibroids).

Exact cause behind developing Uterine Fibroids is still not clearly known. It has been noticed that fibroids are often hereditary in nature and it is more common for the women with African origin. Fibroids can be small or large and it can grow at any age after 19. However, the fibroids tend to shrink in size after menopause due to reduction in the levels of estrogen hormone. Large fibroids can be associated with other conditions like obesity, inability to conceive or give birth to a child, early start of menstruation and other hormonal conditions.

Treatment of Uterine Fibroids depends on various factors like age, size of fibroid, location of fibroid, general health of the patient etc. In case of small size of fibroids or absence of discomforting symptoms, as such no treatment is required. In fact, if the patient is almost near to the normal menopause age, then also no step is taken. Otherwise, the excessive bleeding can be treated by administering hormone medications. Sometimes, the fibroids are removed through surgical procedure like myomectomy or hysterectomy. Here is a list of Frequently Asked Questions about Uterine Fibroids

Researchers are conducting clinical trials to develop better treatments. One such treatment under clinical trial is Radio Frequency Ablation  which obviates the need to undergo a Hysterectomy. Different Uterine Fibroids clinical trials are being performed and managed in 71 cities by 116 different clinical trial investigators (doctors who conduct and supervise the clinical study).  A summary of research investigators, treatments and clinical trials for Fibroids is provided below
