Summary of Parkinson’s Disease Clinical Trials, Research Investigators and New Treatments

Parkinson’s disease (also known as Parkinson’s, Parkinson disease, or PD) is a disorder of the central nervous system (brain) that impairs an individual’s motor skills (movement ability), cognitive processes (thinking ability), and other functions.

The most obvious symptoms are motor-related, including a distinct tremor, rigidity and slowness of movement (read about Muhammad Ali’s fight with Parkinson’s Disease). Current treatments are ONLY effective at managing the early motor symptoms of the disease. These treatments include drugs like levadopa, dompamins agonists and MAO-B Inhibitors.

Clinical Trials (learn more about what clinical trials are and how you can participate in them) are an important process in developing new treatments for Parkinson’s Disease. At present, there are approximately 125 parkinson’s trials currently active in the United States. These clinical trials are evaluating 135+ different interventions for Parkinson’s Disease. These clinical trials are being conducted in 235 different medical centers/institutes and doctor offices. The trials are being investigated by approximately 144 clinical trial investigators.
